Signs that it’s Time to Replace Your HVAC System

Your HVAC System

HVAC systems are no different from other machines that need to be replaced. Manufacturers of these systems have made them so that they need to be upgraded after a certain period of use. Most of your HVAC system will give you at least 2 to 3 decades before you consider replacing or upgrading to a new unit. However, some may not even get to this point despite being the best brands because of poor care and maintenance. Regardless of the longevity, HVAC units will exhibit specific signs before they are due for replacement. Some of these signs are as follows.

Strange Noises

Anyone who owns an HVAC system knows that a unit will have specific normal sounds. However, when the unit suddenly begins having strange/ weird sounds, there is a need to worry. While such sounds indicate minor issues in most cases, if they persist despite repairs and regular checks, it could be a sign that the unit is old and needs to be replaced.

On the other hand, it could be a case of components constantly breaking down due to excessive wear and tear. Unfortunately, replacing such parts is not always the best solution and could be become very costly. An experienced HVAC technician will be able to tell you if your unit has become a money trap and if it is time to replace it, but here are some indicators to keep in mind.

 Increased Energy Bills

If you have not changed your energy consumption, but suddenly your bill seems to increase with each passing month, your AC unit may be to blame. You should first consider calling an electrician to investigate and find out if there is an appliance consuming excess energy. If everything checks out, your next check will be the AC.

An AC system tends to over-consume energy when something is wrong. Pay close attention to it and monitor changes. If the bill keeps rising unsustainably, it may be time to consider a more energy-efficient system. Sometimes age is enough reason to compromise efficiency.

Constant Repairs

If you find yourself having to call the HVAC repair expert every few weeks, there is something wrong. Your HVAC system should not be this problematic. Two repair calls in a short period are enough to make you consider an upgrade. In the end, constant repairs will be costly compared to upgrading to a new efficient unit, and also this often is an indicator of severe wear and tear.

You may even find yourself asking if you need to replace or repair your air conditioning system. Usually, a HVAC expert can help you understand the difference and which is best for your situation.

Unexplained Odors

Ordinarily, your HVAC system should not be smelly. However, if the odor coming from your HVAC system is too much to bear, you may consider buying a fresh new unit. It may be the case of a rotten rodent inside the unit, but something far more serious could be going on if the smell persists. It would be best if you first had an experienced HVAC technician come and check the unit out and make recommendations.

In most cases, old units will have this lingering odor simply because the material of the components have worn out beyond repair. Most competent professionals will recommend replacing the unit with a better/ modern version to suit your home’s current heating and cooling needs.
